Southampton Toast Rack Tram No.2 (1916).Southampton had a horse-drawn tram system from the mid-1800s, but by1876 it was obvious that they were falling behind other major cities,and needed a modern transport system. Problems included thereluctance to electrify the tram system, the intrusiveness of tramlines, and the difficulty of getting through Bargate. To deal withthese issues, the Southampton Tramways Company was formed.The tram pictured above was cut in two in 1916, enabling it to passthrough Bargate, and was known as a “toast rack”. -- source link
