1567 lottery advertisement from England. The first English lotteries were begun by Queen Elizabeth I in the 1560s. The prizes are shown in the image above – a collection of silver bowls and other vessels. As the ad above promises, there were no “Blankes,” meaning that everyone won a prize with their ticket, and the total value of prizes (distributed years later) equaled the value of the tickets.
