British map from April, 1918, detailing the location of British sea mines and the government’s approximation of the location of German mines in the seas surrounding the UK. Close to 250,000 sea mines were used during the First World War. Seventy thousand mines alone were used in the North Sea Mine Barrage, the red area reaching between Norway and Scotland, which was designed to prevent German U-Boat traffic. These 70,000 mines resulted in the sinking of eight U-Boats and the damaging of four more. -- source link
