In the first row of this photo is Governor Harry Flood Byrd of the state of Virginia and four of the five living ex-governors, shown on the steps of the State Capitol. Left to right, Henry Carter Stuart, E. Lee Trinkle, Governor Harry Flood Byrd, Lady Astor, now a member of the British Parliament, but a native of Virginia, Claude A. Swanson (now U.S. Senator) and Andrew Jackson Montague (now a Congressman). Ex-governor Westmoreland, one of the five living governors, is not in the picture. 10/20/28″A radical (Lady Astor a champion of women’s rights, one of the first female elected officials in the UK, the first in Parliament if I remember correctly) amongst reactionaries! Under the various governors shown, ole Virginny was just about the most retrograde of states, segregating the “races” in business, on public transportation, and, of course, in schools, promoting “eugenics,” prohibiting intermarriage (“miscegenation”), minimizing women’s rights, etc. Would that Lady Astor had stayed where she was born and used her formidable personality to change a state where change was badly neeed! -- source link
