spader7:spader7:Presenting mine and trasigpenna’s Bachelor’s Thesis:Creating Your Fantasy Self:An Analysis of Ethnicity in Character Creators in Computer Fantasy Role-Playing Games by Ylva Ljungqvist (me) and Frida Svensson (trasigpenna)Abstract:This thesis examines whether character creators in fantasy role-playing games allow players to create ethnically diverse characters. We studied eight games following a procedure to record perceivable data about the available options, and conducted interviews. The results show that options for minority ethnicities are usually either very few and lack variation or are non-existent. All the interviewees answered that they were generally dissatisfied with the options given to them in character creators and could rarely make a representation of themselves. This highlights the need to diversify the options in order to not exclude players. With this groundbreaking research (as in, it hasn’t been done before) we hope to shed more light on this issue, that is as important as it’s prevalent.Read the full thesis here!A big thank you to everyone who helped us by participating in the survey! Our thesis is now being presented at gamasutra! We have reworked it into three parts, and in a more casual tone for easy reading. Read the first part here! -- source link
