Latest addition to my portfolio: a Tautog, painted from a photo of a specimen that I dip-netted back north in Massachusetts. This was just a baby (about 2 and a half inches long), and I popped him in a clear tupperware and snapped a few reference shots, then took pity on the poor little guy (or, uh, little gal. I have no idea, fish are so very not my area) and released him back into the bladderwrack he was hiding in. I’m about 90% confident in my ID, but he might be something else; it can be hard to tell when they’re this young. I need to ask my mother (aka my resident botanist, casual mycologist, marine biology artist, educational sculptor, nature oracle, fellow scientific illustrator, and all-round cool lady. Once she has her website finished I’ll be linking to her lots, I’m sure.)I painted this while manning the registration desk during the first two days of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators 2012 conference. It got slow for a few hours there. -- source link
