Paying the last turnpike toll, Burwell, Cambridgeshire, 1905. Turnpike tolls were introduced in the 18th century as a way of raising funds to maintain cross-country roads. Reaching their peak in the first half of the 19th century they soon fell into financial trouble as the railway network spread. Many of the turnpike trusts were consolidated and the Local Government Act 1888 gave responsibility for maintaining the roads to county councils and county boroughs. (Wikipedia) -- source link
