representativecharacters:Characters: Cinderella, Prince Christopher, Fairy Godmother, Queen Constantina, and MinervaFrom: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)Representation: Black (Cinderella, Fairy Godmother, Queen Constantina, & Minerva), Filipino (Prince Christopher)Their Importance: This adaptation of the classic musical is notable for the diverse casting, being one of the first productions of Cinderella to cast POC in leading roles. The film is also remarkable for its positive depictions of mixed families and interracial relationships. The Queen is a black woman married to a white man, they have a Filipino son who falls in love with Cinderella who is a black woman, and they are all shown to be in loving relationships. Considering the younger audience this film was aimed at, it does a marvelous job at normalizing mixed and interracial couples and families for kids. Thanks to @silver-stargazing for the write-up!
