Ever wonder what inspired Giuseppe Verdi when he wrote his epic opera Aida back in the early 1870’s? His set decorations and storyline were drawn from information supplied by his colleagues at the time including Auguste Mariette. The textual and visual resources they used are now considered to be among the rarest treasures held in the Brooklyn Museum’s Wilbour Library of Egyptology such as this image here from the Description de l’Egypte. On March 19th we are going to have a rare opportunity to learn what inspired Verdi and to hear from two experts in the field: Dr. Edward Bleiberg, head of the Brooklyn Museum’s department of Egyptology and William Berger, a Verdi scholar from the Metropolitan Opera. This event, produced in collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera, is being held to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Wilbour Library of Egyptology.
