Scientific Editorial Research - New Scientist and Scientific American: Things, I felt, had to change
Scientific Editorial Research - New Scientist and Scientific American: Things, I felt, had to change within the scientific section of my book. This section disproves the theories of Bigfoot’s existence by looking at all of the evidence and portraying it in a chronological and a sensible order. However, it reminded me of a children’s textbook, so I decided to look at successful scientific documents and discover where I was going wrong. Firstly I looked at Californian designer Paulo Angelo Santiago’s redesign of the February 2008 issue of Scientific American magazine. This was a clean and sophisticated piece of editorial that combined simple typography with powerful photography. He allowed the information to sit within its well-considered area of white space, playing with and breaking the grid only when it was necessary. Subtle mustard colours appear throughout, this breaks the type up a bit more and makes the information-heavy pages feel a bit less daunting and a bit more ordered. Secondly I looked through several issues of the New Scientist magazine, as recommended to me by my tutors. They display their articles in an informative way, but avoiding the trap of dullness that so many other science magazines fall into. Brilliant illustrations and a clear grid structure aid the magazines on the whole, making for some very interesting reads. -- source link
