fuckyeahasexual:actuallyasexual:fuckyeahasexual:actuallyasexual:fuckyeahasexual:Aces on TVClick here for a master list of asexuals in fiction and details on House, Sirens, and Game of Thrones.I like the show, but The Killing has a character, Jamie Wright, in season 1 & 2 who refers to himself as a “garden variety asexual.” (ep. 2x02, I believe…) He unfortunately falls into the trope of “well if they don’t want sex, they must want something else” i.e. power and prestige. There’s no explicit connection made between his asexuality and his desire to get ahead, but the connection can be made by fans. What is a garden variety asexual? o.o All I can picture is a asexual who tends a garden. For example I’m a coffee variety asexual please find me in a cafe or a bookstore. He’s simply saying he’s a “typical” asexual, garden-variety meaning an “ordinary” or “common” type of a given thing. Within the context of their conversation, it just means that he doesn’t want a relationship which is an often stereotypical view of asexuality. (Side note: I’m not sure if you’re perplexed over the meaning “garden-variety” or making a joke about the term being used in general, so I’m clarifying the meaning just in case.)I actually could not find the context or clip so I was like what’s an “average asexual” does the character mean celibate? (Since a lot of older works use asexual as sex less). I’ll add trope filled aces as long as they use the same definition. If I can’t find the show to stream is there anything else someone should know before watching about the rep or show itself? The show is available on Netflix. The character is simply referring to the fact that they don’t have relationships, nor do they desire to commit one’s self to a relationship. He is shown to be focused on getting to the top, instead of getting laid. The character is only a side character, and he’s not a particularly good person. He’s insensitive to almost everyone except for the politician he is campaigning for because said politician is his ticket to power. I would label them as amoral and/or immoral asexual character. While he’s not entirely one-dimensional, he’s another in a long line of amoral and/or immoral asexual characters which can be frustrating. I watch the show because I like crime procedurals. I wouldn’t watch the show for the sake of representation, because that’s not going to happen. The characters are complex but the story is grim and disturbing. -- source link
