Fertility Goddess figurine from Çatalhöyük ,Çatalhöyük is an ancient town/city located in what is now southern Turkey. Populated from 7500 B.C. to 5700 B.C, it is one of the best preserved neolithic archeological sites and outdates the rise of civilization in Mesopotamia (3,000 BC). Amazingly, the city shows signs of complex hierarchical government, division of labor, and organized religion (as shown from the figures above). The figurine would have symbolized a fertility goddess, worshiped in order to ensure good crops, good farming weather, and plentiful child birth. Like most fertility deities, the figure is depicted with large breasts and sizable girth. This is a concept unknown to modern westerners, who are constantly influenced by the sex appeal of skinny celebrities and fashion. However, in ancient times everyone was skinny, due to a diet which would have lacked processed carbohydrates, fats, and sugars. In fact most people would have survived on a subsistence diet focusing on high fiber grains and high protein plants such as beans and legume. Meats and proteins were a rare treat. Being fat was rare, and only wealthy people were fat since they would have had the wealth to eat fatty and surgery foods. Thus girth was seen as a symbol of wealth, health, and fertility. In some countries this is still true today. -- source link
