The Mormons of Mexico Mormon colonization of Mexico began when LDS Church Leader Brigham Young ordered mission projects to the country in 1875. However, a Federal crackdown on polygamy caused a large exodus in 1885 as Mormons moved to Mexico in order to find a place to practice their religion in peace. Most of those colonies were located in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua. By the 20th century, the Mormon domain in Mexico included 15 colonies with thousands of residents. During the Mexican Revolution most colonists left the country due to anti-American sentiment, only ¼ ever returned. Today, only two colonies still survive in Chihuahua, which are heavily threatened by the drug cartels. In what has become known as the Mormon-Cartel War, the Mormons of Mexico must be constantly vigilant against attacks and terrorist strikes. As a result, Mexican Mormons tend to be heavily armed and very prepared to defend themselves. Perhaps the most famous decendent of the Mexican Mormon tradition today is fromer Governor and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, whose parents immigrated to the United States in the 1960’s. -- source link
