Missing summer already? You don’t want to miss this opportunity to delve deeper into Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland with one of Coney Island’s greatest living artists. Come learn the history and theory of sideshow banners and create your own under the direction of Marie Roberts, the only traditional banner painter working in Coney Island today.Roberts is a third-generation Coney Islander and her paintings unite past and present sideshow traditions, serving as valuable documentation of the history and contemporary evolution of the sideshow on Coney Island.Her uncle, Lester Roberts (pictured above in the beige suit in her painting A Congress of Curious Peoples along with his colleagues), worked for the Dreamland Circus Sideshow in the 1920s.You can find Roberts work all over Coney Island today & in addition to our galleries, Roberts has also shown at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, PS 1, MOCADA, Deutchbank Galleries. Salina Gallery, LIU, 32 Edgecomb Gallery, Yale School of Art, Gallery SoBab, Seoul, South Korea, and Rivington Gallery, London. She received a B.A in art from Brooklyn College and MFA in painting from Queens College, both CUNY.
