Michael Rooker has made a big comeback in recent years with his portrayal of Merle Dixon on The Walking Dead, but not everyone remembers his 1986 breakthrough lead role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. It’s my pick for Day 26 of 31 days of my favorite scary movies. Rooker portrays the titular Henry, a nomadic killer, with Tom Towles as Otis, a prison buddy with whom Henry is living. The two characters are loosely based on real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole. This gritty, low-budget production languished in MPAA hell for four years due to its graphic violent content, and was finally released in 1990 as an unrated (UR) film. This is not a movie for the feint of heart. Its tale of a pathological mass murderer is told with flat, unforgiving realism. Henry is about as far from a typical 80’s slasher movie as you can get, but the performances are amazing and the photography (shot on 16mm) creates a disturbingly intimate documentary feel. -- source link
