agbouskila:T H E S I SThis is a series of illustrations based on King Artus, an incomplete Jewish adaptation of King Arthur stories written by an anonymous Italian Jew in 1279. You can read it in translation in a book by Curt Leviant. There’s something incredible for me in it — that Jewish people have been trying to find a way to let ourselves be part of cultural narratives for so long, that we never really stopped. In his preface, the Artus scribe (this is what Leviant calls the author) talks about how he’s working on this project as a way to escape his depression (melancholy that is madness, he says: חולי השחורה שהוא חולי השטות), which drew me in just as much as the idea of a Jewish King Arthur. He left the work incomplete for no reason that you can figure out from the text alone, except maybe for that melancholy of his. I’ve got him in the corners, anyway, telling his story. These pieces are: Uter’s Purim feast; Uter killing the duke of Tintagel; Artus as a child; Artus waving off some bad news about Lancelot; Lancelot at the tournament; and four character spots.I’ve been calling this “my horrible baby that I hate very much.” I am sick of seeing it, and it took a lot for me to not pull an Artus scribe on it. But all the same, I hope you like it. -- source link
