mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:The Romans transferred the cult of the healing god Asclepius in Rome founding a healing sanctuary in Isola Tiberina, the holy snake, symbol of the god was also moved there. The Asclepeia, the god’s institutions, favored the progress of the science of medicine in the ancient world and Asclepiades, that is son of Asclepius, was a title attributed to every doctor. Asclepius became the ideal father of healing but the treatment according to his cult wasn’t just a physical but mainly a psychological case, a holistic approach best describes the whole process. The famous oath of Hippocrates was perhaps inspired by the worship of Asclepius. The god often appeared miraculously in the patient’s dream during the rite of incubation, dream analysis was possibly a part of the therapy. Later on Asclepius became known as Soter (saviour) and during the hellenistic times he also became identified with the gods Serapis and Thoth. Marble relief of Asclepius and his daughter Hygeia. From Therme, thessaloniki, Greece, end of the 5th century BC.May Hygeia return! On all levels, soothing and true! Best wishes to all! -- source link
