blublops:exgynocraticgrrl-archive-deacti:Deconstructing Masculinity & Manhood with Michael Kimmel @ Dartmouth CollegeSome people are answering this with some versión of a colorblind fantasy, and you’re not getting that the privilege is not about “feeling human”, it is about awareness. The two woman in the conversation do feel human. The system will dehumanise them for different reasons and in different ways, but they themselves feel entirely human. They’re however, aware of the parts of their identity that are out of the standard and thus, punished. They’re also aware of how their cultural identity (and i say cultural because gender and race are cultural markers) interacts directly with who they are as a person. So no, the privilege check, is not about how you are human and other people are not. The privilege check is : everyone is human, but you never had to think about how you live in a society. There’s zero reflection asked of you. You assumed your world view as a given, because you fit perfectly in it.P. S i was going to rant about this in the notes but i feel like this is an important point. The conversation above was PRECISELY about not making a blanket statement about “human experiences” because there are FACTORS AT PLAY of which you haven’t even THOUGHT if they don’t apply to you. And YOU SHOULD think about them, you should be made aware!!!! And it went over your goddamn heads. -- source link
