Gerrit Rietveld, Schroeder House, 1924. The heart of the house is the airy light-filled space of the first floor.Rietveld’s Schroeder House is typically discussed as an abstract series of floating planes, with balconies sliding over walls, walls sliding past windows, and a radically open plan. But Rietveld placed those planes in consultation with his client, Truss Schroeder, a recent widow and mother of three. “After my husband died and I had full custody of the children, I thought a lot about how we should live together,” Schroder said in a later interview. “So when Rietveld had made a sketch of the rooms I asked, ‘Can these walls go too?’ ” Rietveld himself worked from a home office, under the same roof as his wife and six children.
