Manus Island Green Tree Snail (Papustyla pulcherrima)This is Papustyla pulcherrima, also know as the Manus Island Green Tree Snail or the Emerald Green Snail. These snails live in Papua New Guinea and as their name suggests, live very high up in the branches of tall trees. This snail was listed as Federally Endangered in the United States in 1970 (and is the only gastropod not native to the US that has been given this status). The snails are threatened by habitat loss and demand for jewelry made from their shells. However, there is a little bit of debate over how threatened it actually is. Supposedly, some people who have been to the island in the last couple years have reported seeing a fair amount of them. An interesting crowdsourcing study recently investigated their status by talking to locals and gathering information (such as how common these snails are and how common they used to be in the past). They ended up concluding that while populations of these snails are declining, they aren’t declining at a very fast rate so they’re probably okay for now.You can read the article hereEtsy | DeviantArt | Instagram -- source link
