The first victim of hate crime after 9/11/01 was a 51 year-old Sikh-American in Arizona named Balbir Singh Sodhi. He was profiled as an Arab Muslim – just as Vincent Chin was mistaken for a Japanese and murdered in a Detroit suburb in 1982. Hollywood went on to “type” a group of people who shared a faith – as brown skin, beard and turban – until they became racialized. This was accepted in all Anglophone territories – as our British executive producer put it: “Islamic look” became a thing after 9/11. Religion has no skin color, just like “Indo-European” is a language group, and has no eye color.
