Spot the Aquifer! Some geologic units are permeable to flowing fluids such as water, oil, or gases. Permeable geologic units have open space in-between mineral grains and those spaces are connected, so the fluid can move between grains without being trapped. In this shot from the Niagara Gorge, there’s one clear area where the geologic units are permeable. Water is able to flow through the unit until it eventually emerges where the unit is exposed at the surface, at which point the water finds that it is no longer thermodynamically stable and converts into an icy spike. A geologic unit that holds water underground is called an aquifer; a low permeability unit that water cannot flow through is called an aquitard.-JBBImage credit: Kyle Hartshorn (cc licensed)https://flic.kr/p/JmdAa2 -- source link
