If you’re a reddit or imgur user, you may have come across this image of a happy bee living in a fence post. This little guy is called a carpenter bee (genus Xylocopa, subfamily Xylocopinae), which are relatively large and are often mistaken for bumble bees. They are traditionally considered solitary insects, though some species do develop simple social nests in which mothers and daughters may live together. They make their nests by vibrating their bodies as they rasp their mandibles against the wood. Generally, their tunnels are near the surface and thus little structural damage is done, if any.
