hqcreations:phalpal:The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is an Indiana native and a delicious treat for humans and wildlife alike. For them to be edible, they must have naturally fallen to the ground. If not, the persimmons have a very astringent flavor. The trees are interesting because they are dioecious, meaning there are both male and female trees. They are also divided into two types, a northern 90 chromosome variety and a southern 60 chromosome variety. Most named cultivars are of the northern type. There is a curious lore surrounding persimmons and their ability to predict winter weather. If you cut open a seed and finds a shape resembling a spoon, it means lots of heavy, wet snow is coming in winter. If it looks like a fork, you can expect light snow and a mild winter. If knife shaped, cold winds are coming. When I cut open a seed from one of my persimmons, I found a spoon. We’ll see if this prediction comes true!I found this once in Central Park, NYC. It was quite tasty; it almost tasted like a medjool date~ -- source link
