noisymouse:Inktober Day 3: PoisonFor today, have Sigyn, a character from Norse mythology.Sigyn is the wife of Loki and is barely ever mentioned, ever, in anything. Her biggest mention is merely as a footnote to one of Loki’s stories: Loki is seized by the gods and punished, in some versions for killing Baldur, and in other versions for summarily insulting every single god as they were all gathered for a feast. His sons are slain and he is bound to a rock (in some versions he is even bound with his son’s entrails) and an enormous venomous snake is set above him, dripping poison on him for eternity. Sigyn is mentioned to stay with her husband, catching the poison in a bowl.I find Sigyn an interesting figure, if one takes the time to think about what kind of person she must be, and flesh out her character. I don’t imagine her as nothing but the silent wife of the trickster god who accepts her fate and attends to her husband in his punishment because that is what a dutiful wife just does.I see her as a woman with a tremendous capacity to bear the weight of grief and suffering, and keep going. I see her as a woman who surely must be filled with anger and a desire for vengeance. In Norse mythology it was said that someday Loki would break free from his bonds and wage a final war against the gods that would end the world, and I imagine him fueled by eons of Sigyn’s own bitter words spoken to him in the dark.I think she’s interesting. So have a doodle.I have a patreon: check it out to see sneak peeks and WIPs.All my inktober posts can be found here, and last year’s inktober posts are all here! -- source link
