VibracoreIn this neat series of photos, you can see a team of undergraduate research students, grad students, and lab technicians from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science collecting a core of sediment through the beach at Gloucester, Virginia. Different layers of sediment and different chemistries can give a record of how the beach has evolved and how storms have hit over recent centuries, including how this spot will respond to future sea level rise. This coring technique is called vibracoring. The core is vibrated as it enters the ground, causing grains to move out of the way so that the barrel of the tube can pass without disturbing the sediments in the middle.-JBBImages:https://www.flickr.com/photos/virginiaseagrant/sets/72157697091133122/with/44029783542/http://www.americanvibracore.com/company/what-is-vibracoring/ -- source link
