Day 29 of 31 days of my favorite scary movies is the only made-for-television production on the list; the 1979 TV miniseries adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot. Directed by Tobe Hooper (of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist fame) and starring David Soul (yes from Starsky & Hutch) and James Mason, the miniseries diverges in a number of ways from the source material, but is nonetheless highly effective in its own right. Perhaps the biggest and best change, head vampire Kurt Barlow who is cultured and very human looking in the book is transformed into a demonic looking vampire based on the classic image of Nosferatu. Many of the gorier bits of the story had to be toned down for network television, but Hooper still manages to create some wonderfully atmospheric and creepy moments including the scene of an undead Danny scratching at the window pictured above. In my opinion, this actually ended up being one of the better adaptations of a Stephen King work. -- source link
