British map of Calcutta in 1842. Now known as Kolkata, the city was the headquarters of the British East India Company, which began amassing territory and power in the region in the 1600s and 1700s. The city boomed during the imperial heyday of the nineteenth century, becoming a center of government and infrastructure development.
