prudencepaccard:edwarddespard:“Le Cauchemar de la Poire” (The Nightmare of the Pear), Philipon for Le Charivari (1833)“So, Despard - why do you like Charles Philipon so much?”“Why, for his artistic and political sensibilities, of course - his insightful interpretation and artistic depiction of the republican milieu in France under the Restoration and the July Monarchy…Well, that and the sheer crack that goes on in his caricatures.”Seriously -this is Marianne, as the Republic, sitting on Louis-Philippe (who has a literal pear for a head) waving a dagger and the scales of justice in his face. What, I ask you, is not to love? I’m a huge sucker for the whole Louis-Philippe-is-a-pear thing. Obviously all of Philipon’s pear-headed-person stuff is classic but I also like the pure surrealism of Daumier’s giant pears, like his Fuseli parody “Le cauchemar”or the ominous “Une énorme poire pendue par les hommes du peuple”Then there’s Auguste Bouquet’s “Les favoris de la poire” which depicts a big pear that also has a face. It is also a fabulous pun along the lines of tenlittlebullets’ excellent “On pourrait même dire que c’étaient ses agents favoris.” -- source link
