Bonus 1979-1990 Anime PrimerThe Door Into Summer (1981)Marion is a beautiful youth dedicated to the ideals of rationalism. He is the leader of a group of like-minded boys at his 19th Century French boarding school, all of whom strive to shun emotion in favor of logic. However, it soon becomes clear that hormone-addled adolescents aren’t the best at keeping to strict philosophical tenets; two of the boys begin bickering over a lovely maiden named Ledania, another is tortured by his unrequited feelings for Marion, and Marion himself proves susceptible to the charms of a sophisticated older woman. When violence inflames their precocious passions, the door opens onto tragedy…The Door Into Summer is an adaption of shoujo pioneer Keiko Takemiya’s coming-of-age manga of the same name. A few of Takemiya’s works were adapted during the 80s, but this collaborative effort between veteran Toei Animation and a young Madhouse stands out as the most polished effort. The distinctive 70s shoujo style is preserved and strengthened via striking use of color, skillful scene composition and a sentimental score. For those already enamored by the raw emotional headiness of early shoujo, The Door Into Summer should hit all the right spots. For those merely intrigued by it, it’s a fine introduction. -- source link
