A medieval church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. It was built originally in 4th century and restored a couple of times during following centuries. The last restoration was made in 1084 after the Norman sack of Rome. The bell tower in the pic was added then. In the foot of the tower there are the remains of emperor Claudius’ temple, above them a couple of storeys from the old church and on the top the new bell tower. Also some sort of bird can be seen in the pic (hawk?) The original church was built on the site of two Roman soldiers who were martyred during Julian the Apostate’s reign hence it’s name. The old Roman house was discovered in the 19th century and the excavations are open to public. A pretty cool place and recommended it to anyone who is interested in history. For examples lots of frescoes from the 2nd-4th century and almost no other tourists (at least last summer). Some pics can be seen in my other blogs. -- source link
