yuesai:Let me explain the history behind this beautiful/sad fan art for a second. You see what Russia is holding? Her name is Laika which means barker in Russian. Scientists didn’t know if humans could survive a space launch, and so they sent out animals first. Laika was a stray dog from the streets of Moscow as she was taken in for training to become a Soviet space dog, launching on November 3, 1957. She became one of the first animals to be sent into space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth. She unfortunately died within hours after the launch due to overheating. Another problem that sparked controversy was that Laika’s shuttle wasn’t made to return. A global debate was fought in terms of animal cruelty as the United Kingdom’s Canine Defense League asked all dog owners to give a moment of silence for Laika, and animal right groups protested outside of Soviet embassies. In 1998, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Oleg Gazenko, one of the scientists who sent Laika into space, came to express his regrets as he said, “Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it… We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.” On April 11, 2008, a monument was built in her honor, depicting her on top of a rocket in Moscow. And that is your history lesson for today.
