feynites:alisgravenil1and2:#HEIMDALL: THERE ARE ONLY TWO THINGS I LOVE #TREASON AND THOR #SINCE THOR’S NOT HERE #TREASON IT IS! (via @spacefloozy) You know what, looking at the whole landscape of Asgard, I am like 99% sure that Thor learned most of his best traits from watching Heimdall.Like, there’s this semi-mystery with regards to Thor, which is mainly how he managed to be… Thor. Not the angry, loud, brash warrior guy we meet at the start of the film, but the calmer, much more friendly person he reveals himself to be once he’s no longer in Asgard. There’s not a lot of mystery as to where Thor’s Asshole traits come from, Odin ‘Barks His Younger Son Down Like a Dog’ Allfather is a pretty obvious source of inspiration, as is Asgard’s own warrior-culture and imperialistic, patronizing attitudes. Loki is perfectly formed as a product of this environment, but Thor’s actually heroic qualities are a bit ???So for sources of this attitude, there’s Frigga. But while we see Frigga being kind and brave (she doesn’t hesitate to defend Jane even though Odin basically called her a goat, by contrast), Frigga is also fairly permissive of Odin’s bad behaviour. She makes excuses for him to Loki and she’s definitely got some manipulative qualities herself. But she also seems pretty firmly on the ‘no defying the crown’ side of things. So where did Thor pick up his ‘actually protect people’ and ‘commit treason when necessary’ and ‘look out towards the universe because there’s so much to see’ type attitudes?I think he got them from hanging out with Heimdall.I think young Thor saw the big gate sword and the younger gate guard in his super shiny armour, summoning up portals to other worlds, and he got eyes the size of dinner plates and the same voice in his head that was like ‘Valkyries are so cool’ went ‘that is the best person I have EVER seen!’ And he proceeded to bother Heimdall for the next thousand plus years, wanting to know how he could see everything and if he can see everything can he see this or could he see that and can he see what Thor is holding behind his back? His mother told him that Heimdall has many mothers but how many mothers does he have? Can Thor meet them? Do they send him cakes? When Thor’s mother is away sometimes she sends him cakes and brings back presents and can Thor turn the gate sword can he try doing it please Heimdall he’s absolutely sure he can and-…Well.Heimdall’s got a great poker face, but he’s not made of stone. Plus the prince actually does listen when other people talk. More than most people give him credit for. When Odin says ‘a good king never seeks out war, but must always be ready for it’, and Frigga says ‘there is always a reason’, Heimdall says ‘the truest king or warrior is a guardian, and a guardian protects’. Heimdall says he would not want to be king, because it is easy for kings to forget what is right. Better to be a gate guard (Thor laughs at the idea of Heimdall comparing himself to the guards who just stand outside of rooms and chambers - he’s Heimdall he’s different!) Heimdall says the universe is full of people of all different shapes and manners and sizes, and though they might lead very different lives, it is important that they be free to.Heimdall says a lot of things, despite his reputation for stoicism and getting lost, at times, in his own far-seeing sight.Thor listens.Thor’s his favourite. -- source link
