tobermoriansass:chamerionwrites:#ok i’m not going to lie #but one of the things i actually really love about the sequels #is how they disrupt the linear upward movement of the franchise’s narrative #the prequels are about a center which does no longer hold and end in disaster and grief #but they are somehow ‘righted’ by the OT and find their sense and accomplishment in it #(the prophecy was right and the blood sweat violence and tears are all justified by the triumph of redemptive love) #and while this is aesthetically more convincing and gives a feeling of artistic completion and balance #i actually prefer the violent entropy reintroduced by tfa –and its philosophical and political reading #because it is more interesting for me to think of evil as something that cannot so easily be washed away #than to adopt without question the fairy-tale morality of return of the jedi #on a personal level anakin may have repented –but he has not atoned and the world hasn’t healed #and the skin he has left behind has welcomed a new host #because dying and sacrificing your life for someone you love is not exactly enough #and we could have a thousand prophecies and a thousand victories #greed violence and the lust for power are exactly as perennial as we are #all i’m trying to say is that the angry OT fans may be right when they protest about the disruption introduced by tfa #to the timeline and harmony of the franchise #but that i’m actually happy to sacrifice cinematographic perfection for the sake of a little darkening of the sw universe (via lagren0uille)#YES#yes yes yes#I mean as a mildly irritated OT fan I think tfa whiffed /hard/ when it came to han’s characterization#that they could have and should have played with the dysfunctional family theme#without hitting the reset button on the guy’s entire character arc#and in a way that owes more to the pop cultural funhouse mirror image of han than to the actual character in the text#but!!! my fundamental problem there is with poor characterization#rather than with the disruption and dysfunction and darkness itself#and on the thematic and political level I think that it works very well#and that examining the damage and brokenness left behind in the wake of violence and evil#the way it flares up like a systemic infection in humanity’s history#is always a story worth telling (via chamerionwrites) #also it just peels away the delusion #that you only have to fight evil — in this case fascism #only once #you don’t fight it once. you fight it again and again and again. #because its always resurfacing #in some form or the other #from those who are nostalgic for the past #who have lost some manner of power and influence and are desperate to regain it #i like that they’re not shying away from portraying the fundamental flaw at the heart of democracy #which is that it is so easily subverted by those with terrible agendas #and if the price is the escapist (and frequently racist) mythology fantasy of star wars #i’m okay with that. #i’m okay with not having yt ppl play the radical heroes (taken and transposed from vietnam and given yt faces) #(while the “”“’‘natives”“” are made nonhuman aliens who are also cannibals) #and i am seriously SERIOUSLY questioning here our attachment to the mythological nature of star wars #america has enough cultural escapist myths. you don’t actually need another one: you need a mirror #okay that’s enough salt for now bye #star wars #meta (via tobermoriansass) -- source link
