SunburstThe eastern coast of South Africa is separated from the inner portion of the country by a sharp topographic feature known as the Drakensberg Escarpment. It originally formed nearly 200 million years ago as the Gondwana supercontinent broke apart. Rift valleys split apart the heart of Gondwana as India, Africa, Antarctica, and Australia pulled away from each other. The Drakensberg Escarpment is one of the remnants of this rift zone. The rocks to the east of this site were pulled apart and sank downwards, eventually opening the Indian Ocean. Today, continued movement of the crust and the mantle beneath allows the mountains to stand high above the coastal plain, setting this scene of the sun gradually slipping behind the peaks.-JBBImage credit: Martin Heigan (creative commons license share)https://flic.kr/p/AnfE8aRead more:http://www.britannica.com/place/Drakensberghttp://www.walkopedia.net/walks/display-walk.asp?WalkID=13 -- source link
