“I am a mixture” said Frida Kahlo. Her mother, Matilde Calderón y González
“I am a mixture” said Frida Kahlo. Her mother, Matilde Calderón y González, was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and was of Indigenous and Spanish descent. Her father, Guillermo Kahlo, was born in Germany and emigrated to Mexico when he was eighteen. Kahlo shared an exceptionally close relationship with her father, a professional photographer known for documenting Mexico’s colonial architectural heritage. Through sitting for him and assisting him on shoots, Kahlo developed an eye for poses and angles which would later feature in her own work. The vibrant clothing that would come to characterize Kahlo’s style would have been familiar to her from a young age through her mother, who hailed from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Posted by Rachel Lewis“Soy una mezcla” dijo Frida Kahlo. Guillermo Kahlo (Mexican, born Germany, 1872-1941).
