huot-to-know-my-name:Alright, internet. I need your help. Recently, I handed in an excerpt from my story ‘They’, Not ‘Him’ as an assignment for English. The only thing I (the guy who started writing short stories at age five and quickly learned to ignore that stupid green line in MS Word) got marked down for was grammar. “Why?” you ask as you read the low-quality jpeg that actually answers your question, “Your grammar is fantastic!”It is because of Alex. Alex is the main character of ‘They’, Not ‘Him’. I have submitted something including them before, but with the specific aim of not using personal pronouns for effect, This time, however, I did. The teacher who marked this told me that the use of a “plural” pronoun set for Alex (they/them/their) made it seem as though the character was schizophrenic or had multiple personalities. No matter how many times I insisted “they” could be singular, she refused to believe me. It is very rare that I see genderqueer characters in original fiction, and even rarer that they are the centre of the story. Long story short, I need some backup. Reblog this if you think “they/them/their” can be used as a singular pronoun set. -- source link
