worldwar-two: German and Italian High Command in Munich, Germany, at the signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938. In the bottom row, from left to right, are: Hermann Goering (Reichsmarschall of the Third Reich), Benito Mussolini of Italy, Adolf Hitler, and Ciano Galiatstso (Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy). Under the Agreement, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy signed off on the German annexation of portions of Czechoslovakia known as the Sudetenland; as Czechoslovakia was not invited to the conference it is known in those regions as the Munich Dictate or Munich Betrayal. Today, the Agreement is seen as a failed act of appeasement toward Germany. [x] -- source link
