worldwar-two:In addition to being a symbol for the USA and American government, Uncle Sam also has the distinction of being a comic book superhero; in the latter version, he is a mystical being who was originally the spirit of a slain patriotic soldier from the American Revolutionary War, and who now appears in the world whenever his country needs him. First appearing in the first issue of National Comics in July 1940 (published by Quality Comics, later acquired by DC Comics), he appears here in the July 4, 1942 issue of Uncle Sam Quarterly, his own series. The issue was a special crossover edition, featuring comic book characters from across the industry and with all proceeds going towards the purchase of war bonds. It features Uncle Sam leading a team of superheroes known as the Freedom Fighters, including Captain America and Wonder Woman, in a struggle against various Nazi villains led by Red Skull.
