“Loading Cars with Guano at the Great Heap, Chincha Islands,” 1865. There was a gold rush of sorts for the accumulated bird feces on islands off of South America as farmers in the 19th century worked to make their farms more productive to meet demand from the world’s skyrocketing population. The islands were so dry that there were centuries of guano accumulated on them. The guano supplies were largely exhausted by 1900. -- source link
