Idk if this person was maybe not American but the federal minimum wage is $7.25 here.$7. 25 an hour x 40 hours = $290 per week$290 per week x 4 weeks = $1,160 per month$1,160 per month x 12 months = $13,920 per yearThat’s without any federal or state withholding from your paychecks. Or benefits, if your job gives them. But it’s still over the limit for an annual salary that doesn’t get taxed by $1,720 if you’re filling single and you’re under 65. So you’ll owe taxes. If you had withholding taken from your checks, they may send some back. Maybe. So it’s worse than op said. And don’t tell me that, “minimum wage isn’t meant to support a family,” bullshit because that’s exactly what it’s for. Minimum wage is supposed to be a living wage for a single person. I don’t know about you, but I can’t survive on $14k/year. Average rent here is $1,000/month, then there’s utilities, gas, car insurance, I’m gonna be generous and say my car would last forever and I wouldn’t have a car payment, car repairs, food, cell phone, internet, clothing, toiletries, medical costs. I’m not even including entertainment, pets, or putting anything into savings but you can already see it’s impossible. Just my rent would take $12,000 or of that $14,000. -- source link
