Imperial Presentation Box, 1916 This box is an example of the imperial presentation boxes that were given as either a gift to foreigners to maintain good relations with their countries or to Russians as a gift for services to the Tsar. This particular box was one of the last made, being completed on 30th September 1916. It arrived with its intended recipient on 5th May 1917, after the Tsar had been forced to abdicate. Gabriel Hanotaux, the ex Minister of Foreign Affairs between France and Russia, was presented the box by Grand Duke Nicholas, a cousin of the Tsar. Later the box was acquired by Queen Mary, who gave it as a birthday gift to her husband George V in 1934. -- source link
