This game launched today. The description of the game on it’s Steam store page is simple:“The Beginner’s Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instead, it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand.”I played The Stanley Parable when it came out around two years ago. TSP was an exploration game where you make lots of choices while a narrator narrates a story. You can disobey the narrator though and change the outcome of the story in many, many ways and there are a lot of endings you can come across. I enjoyed TSP quite a bit. People talk a lot of shit about “walking simulators” but TSP was an experience that was very unique and worth the handful of hours I spent in it.Hearing about a new game from the same creator of TSP was exciting and the initial reaction so far to The Beginner’s Guide has been overwhelmingly positive. So on a whim I purchased it and played it through in one sitting. I just finished it a little while ago and after taking some time to absorb what I had just played, I got on here to write about it.The Beginner’s Guide is fantastic. I can’t say much else though. It’s a wonderful game that I really connected with. There were multiple times in the game where I shed a few tears because of the experience and ideas it brought up were just relatable to me and made my very emotional. I feel I should say though that this is a very different game than TSP. Where TSP has a lot of humor, The Beginner’s Guide is pretty serious. It’s hard to say much else about it without spoiling anything. I want to recommend that people give this game a shot because I think it was extraordinarily good, but I also understand that “artsy” games and “walking simulators” aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. It did only take about an hour and half to play though like the description says so I feel that maybe people that don’t like those type of games could get through this one because it is so short.If you are considering playing The Beginner’s Guide, I gotta say that you MUST make sure you avoid spoilers.
