Aerial view of the Sumerian archaeological site of Uruk (Warka, Iraq). The history of Sumer is from c. 4000 - 2004 BC. In 2004 BC, Sumer was invaded by the Elamites and Amorites.During the Uruk Period (c. 4000 - 2900 BC), cities began to emerge across the landscape, with Uruk rising to prominence. Uruk is believed to the world’s first city, but Sumerians considered Eridu to be the first city, established by the gods to bring order and civilization to humanity.Other important cities in Sumer were Ur, Kish, Lagash, Larsa and Nippur. The names of these cities come from the Ubaid people (preceding the Uruk Period), not from the Sumerians. This means that they were founded earlier as villages by the Ubaid people. -- source link
