It’s Hockey Day in Canada on CBC, so here’s today’s hockey history: the Coloured Hockey League was formed in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1894 – 22 years before the National Hockey League. The league included more than a dozen teams – with names like the Dartmouth Jubilees, the Halifax Eurekas, the Truro Sheiks and the AfricVille Brown Bombers – and employed over 400 African Canadians. They revolutionized hockey, introducing the slapshot and acrobatic goaltending using kick saves, transforming the game from a gentle, slow-moving affair to a fast-paced, physical sport. White players eventually imitated all of these innovations, took credit for them, and then pushed Black athletes out of the sport, leading to the dissolution of the Coloured Hockey League amid the wave of 20th century racism. -- source link
