Sacred Cenote (Chichén Itzá, Mexico).This is the largest cenote in Chichén Itzá, connected to ElCastillo via a 274m-long causeway.  Human sacrifices and artifacts(including items made of gold) were thrown down into it.  Thepractice seems to have reached its peak after the city went intodecline in the 1200s.According to Bishop Diego de Landa, “into this well they have had,and then had, the custom of throwing men alive as a sacrifice to thegods, in times of drought, and then believed that they did not diethough they never saw them again…” -- source link
