#BKMLibrary continues its digitization of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (BIAS) Bulletin, a collaborative project with BAM Hamm Archives and supported by a METRO digitization grant. The Bulletin highlights news and activities of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts & Sciences, a true renaissance organization that was the parent of the Brooklyn Museum, BAM, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. The original vision for the Museum building was designed by McKim, Mead, and White and included the construction of eighty monolithic sculptures representative of great periods in the world’s history. The Bulletin devotes several articles detailing the planning and construction of the sculptures to be installed above the columns and pilasters on the façade of the building:“The monolithic sculptures to be placed on the two facades of the northeast quadrant will represent oriental ideals: the sculptures on the two facades of the north west quadrant, Greek and Roman ideals; those on the two facades of the southwestern quadrant, medieval and renaissance ideals: and those on the two facades of the southeastern quadrant, modern European and American ideals.” (BIAS Bulletin, v.1, no.4, page 66, 1908)In the end, only thirty of the planned eighty sculptures were completed. Check out this blog post for a more detailed history of the sculptures.Once digitized, the BIAS Bulletin will be hosted on the BAM Archives website–for a preview, we have the covers and table of contents of the BIAS Bulletin available on the Brooklyn Museum website. We are delighted to make the activities of the BIAS available to all and thanks to Metro for its support!Posted by Hilary Price -- source link
