moderntrickster: MYTHOLOGY MEME | Gods/Goddesses [03/10] Morana (also Marzanna), the Slavic goddess of the harvest and winter. It is Morana, like Persephone in the Greek myth, that heralds the seasons. In her story, she seduced the sun god Dazbog and made him her lover. When she tired of him, she attempted to poison him, but he lived and burned her, sending her back to Nav. As a goddess of the cold, dark winter (and, by nature, death), her time in our world brought with it the barren winter. Her return to Nav, and the subsequent relief from winter’s bitter cold, is celebrated every year with the ritual burning or drowning of effigies and poppets. She is also given some dominion over witches and the mare (or mara) - malevolent beings associated with nightmares - possibly owe their name to her. There is also some etymological association between Morana and plague. -- source link
