@subsilvernight I saw you posting on this glorious series and have to add this panel. [Spoilers] It’s the greatest shout-out to a creator that I’ve read in all of comics and is one of the ways that Defenders: Indefensible sort of masters the art of emotional depth disguised as silliness.Namor encounters this alternate version of himself while the Defenders are trying to defeat Dormammu – a human reflection of himself named for the character’s original creator (Bill Everett) plus the last name of Namor’s human father. Mackenzie is a great foil to Namor in the series, embodying his positive traits while also serving as a voice of moderation for his rashness, arrogance, and anger.Giffen and DeMatteis clearly knew a lot about the history of the character and about Everett, who intentionally wrote Namor as a version of himself when he was an “angry young man” (Everett’s own words) and who, towards the end of his short life, finally returned to writing the Sub-mariner comics more focused, calmer, and (literally) more sober.Things end on a bittersweet note when Dormammu’s alternate reality has to be reset in order for the Defenders to save the world:Namor remains an endearing jackass, of course, but I feel like this series is a great example of how writers can do justice to characters by investing a bit of time in learning their history. -- source link
