Edgar Snow chats with Vice Chairman Liu Shaoqi and Chairman Mao Zedong, 1960. Snow was given access to Mao and his band of communist rebels in the 1930s, as they fought a desperate battle in the mountains against the Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-Shek. Snow proved to be a valuable conduit to the western world for the Chinese communist movement; his book Red Star Over China made Mao out to be a relatively sympathetic figure. Snow was eventually forced out of the United States during the red scare of the 1950s, and continued to provide a relatively sympathetic view of China to the west until his death in 1972.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
